New JME diagnosis

Sun, 04/10/2016 - 21:37
My 18 year old daughter was just diagnosed with JME this past week. I am trying really hard to be strong for her however find myself suffocating her. She was started on Keppra. I am afraid of leaving her alone to sleep. If you have worked through this please let me know how you dealt with it. She will be leaving for college in August and I am scared for her.

MargieFor the both of you relax let your daughter be your daughter. She is no different today then she was a year ago. Yes I know about mothers and their worry. I had one. I also moved out of the house because I wanted my independence which I wasn't getting when both she and Pete (step father) were always counting my pills or telling me what I HAD to DO. I knew I had limits and stayed within them most of the time. Unless she has had a nocturnal seizure she may never have one in her sleep. I know I haven't in the 50+ years I have had epilepsy.Keppra is becoming the best medication to control seizures. I have been using it for about 15 years now. It reduced the number of seizures I was having. It also shortened the time in those seizures. Today I can have a seizure while standing next to you and you would know nothing about the seizure. The best way to get control of her seizures is for you and her to always ask questions. If you have a neurologist you like then please keep a good relationship with him/her. By doing that many questions can be answered in a phone call. Taking her medications is important. If the RX says 2 times a day those times need to be 12 hours apart morning and night. If her license is revoked then she does need to find out about mass transit. I use it and can get anywhere I want in Dallas area. I may have to walk a few blocks but then 40 bucks for a monthly pass is cheaper then gas. When I moved out of the house I wasn't far away, I went to college at night and at least 1-2 nights a week I stopped by and visited. I hope this helpsJoe
