New to Forum - Urgently Need Help Concerning Seizures

Hi Everyone, I am just knew to this forum/blog bit. I have a particular urgent interest in you guys sharing your knowledge with me. In your seizures have you become disoriented, confused, and just plain weird? Let me explain. I really need help. My husband has no history of seizures. However, a week ago Friday, he had a grand mall seizure as I was taking him to see the eye doctor. I have never witnessed anything like this in my life. He collapsed on the ground and began kicking his feet and hitting his chest with his hands. I immediately called 911. I return to my husband and his face and neck turned a horrible blackish purple and I thought he was dead. I lifted his head up a bit and the color came back. The paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital. We were in the hospital from Friday to Sunday and they ran multiple tests which all were negative. We thought everything was under control and he was released. Then on Wednesday morning, as we lay in bed, I felt him treble rather hard. He was lying on his side away from me. I asked him if he was awake and he didn't answer. I thought he was just sleeping. I got up and got a drink of water and returned to bed. He wiggled again and I said, "Are you awake?" He didn't respond so I went around and his eyes were staring and he was drooling. I said, "Are you okey?" He responded with a gurgle. I asked the second time and received the same response. I called 911 again. His behavior is bizarre. Nothing like he is. His is confused, disoriented and says the weirdest things. One night he kept taking his hospital clothes off and they had to sedate him. He is still in the hospital tonight. They have run all kinds of tests. Still no conclusions. I asked the neurologist if stress could cause a seizure and he said he had never heard of one causing a seizure. I don't think this is an epileptic seizure, but it is so weird. As I talked with him today, he seems a little better but still not himself. He doesn't even remember the first seizure and in fact he doesn't remember being home for those few days, even though he appeared to be improving. Has anyone ever experience this or know someone who has? I wonder if the medicine that he was on could have contributed to the seizure. Any comments would be appreciated. The doctor is now concluding that he needs to see a psychiatrist. Thanks, Carolyn

So sorry to hear about your husband. It had to be so scary to see that for the first time!! I have epilepsy but I have seen seizures in the past. SO I am assuming the doctor concluded that he DIDNT HAVE EPILEPSY??? Is that why he is sending him to a psychiatrist? there are non epileptic seizures and seizures they are called Pseudoseizures Non-Epileptic Seizures http://www.epilepsynse.org.uk/pages/info/leaflets/factsnea.cfm Nonepileptic Seizures http://hsc.usf.edu/COM/epilepsy/PNESbrochure.pdf Pseudoseizures http://www.aurorahealthcare.org/services/epilepsy/non-epileptic-events.asp If he has epilepsy, stress can be the cause of a seizure. What meds was he taking? take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Stress, lack of adequate sleep, sleep apnea, metabolic problems and cardiac problems.....all can contribute to seizures as well as medicines. Was he seen by a neurologist and did he get an EEG and MRI ? You can have E even with a normal EEG. You can get a second opinion don't forget and see a specialist in epilepsy called an epileptologist. It took me 6 years to get an EEG following head injuries and with a clear EEG they gave me a diagnosis of migrane. Then 6 years after a car accident I got another EEG and they diagnosed E. In between I was misdiagnosed and treated like dirt. If you want to go ahead and see a shrink, make sure it is someone experienced in dealing with E because otherwise you may wind up with continued problems and unsatisfactory treatment.Les
