I have just been diagnosed with a seizure disorder, I have Grand and Petit Mal seizures. Trying to adapt, but it's difficult and scary.

Hi, How old are you? I was originally diagnosed at age 5, then taken off all my meds at age 12 then for me seizures came back because of a virus when I was 16. I never really knew life without the tests, etc (was still getting enough of that done between 12 and 16). It must be overwhelming to find out later in life. The one thing I can tell you is I grew up living life keeping seizures sort of on the 'side line' so to speak. Sure, there are some things I can't do - can't drink alcohol, can't drive a car. However, for the most part I don't let the fact that I have epilepsy control my life. I don't go to bars, but I still go out to movies and all kinds of other places. I grew up as a sports kid and just joined a gym to get back into some fitness. I graduated university in one field, yet work in another. Seizures don't have to change who you are much. You can still do most things you want to. Sometimes, you just have to find a different way. Take each day one day at a time, stay positive. Things will get easier in time, and you will see yourself as a person who just happens to take medicine for seizures...(or as my boyfriend puts it "vitamins" to keep my mind healthy). I'm on Topomax, Clobazam & Keppra Hang in there. It will get easier to deal with. ~ EC

Thanks for the advice, I'm begining to get more comfortable as I talk to more people and get more information. I'm 42 years old, and the seizures started about six months ago, currently I'm taking Dilantin, which helps with everything but the partial seizures. I've begun to keep a seizure diary and will be going to a support group here where I live. Thanks again.
