Thu, 04/20/2017 - 17:48
hi, i'm not diagnosed with epilepsy. i have psyche issue: PTSD, severe anxiety and DID. i have been having auditory and olfactory hallucinations. the auditory are mostly gone with an antipsychotic. the neurologist wants me to do the 24 hour sleep deprived EEG to rule out seizures. i'm concerned the test would be really stressful and i don't think i have any signs of seizures. is it worth all that stress? thank you

my daughter has seizures that

my daughter has seizures that are smelling something, and there are definitely some infrequent auditory issues (one ear only for her) that are in line with her other seizures (not listing here) so I don't think you can say you have no symptoms of seizures, those could be seizures. Problem is that these symptoms could be due to more than one cause so your doc is doing the right thing checking it out. EEGs are not definitive but sleep deprivation helps improve the yield so your doc is checking this mindfully.EEGs are not stressful, kinda boring. Being sleep deprived means someone should take you there and back because you should be super tired (not driving).

If you are having olfactory

If you are having olfactory,or visual or sound hallucinations, Epilepsy is certainly a possibility. Most people mistakenly think epilepsy is exclusuvLynn of people that have tonic clinic seizures. (people that fall and shake and foam at the mouth). That is not true. There are many types of epilepsy and many types of seizures, and yes, it includes olfactory, visual and sound hallucinations that you describe. So how can you know that "you don't have it" when you know nothing about seizures or epilepsy, and have never gotten a EEG? Having this test done is the absolutely right move. If you are mentally ill and your symptoms caused by your mental illness, then your EEG will be normal. If abnormal, then you could be both as one fiesta exclude the other.

thank you.
