myoclonic jerks

Fri, 01/05/2007 - 14:00
hi this is a first time post. i just need a few questions answered really about myoclonic jerks. i have been experiencing what i described as 'shudders' for several months. They are in the muscles around my shoulder blades. I think they feel like someone "stepping on my grave". the gp has diagnosed them as myoclonic jeks but she is a bit useless so i thoiught id ask your opinion! ill try to describe as best as i can: i feel a tense sensation across my shoulder blades which ripples to a shudder lasting a couple of seconds that is usually so forcefull that my left arm (sometimes both) will fly up to around the height of my face. I usually get around 5-10 a day. the reason i suspect they may NOT be myoclonic jeks is, from the descriptions i have read of sufferers, that they do not seem to be 100% instant. From the descriptions i have read, people with myoclonic jerks seem to be taken totally by surprise. But when i feel them (whatever they are!) i have around half a second where i know my arms are about to fly up as i can feel it in my muscles. Not sure if im being too picky here! also, it has happened recently (last few weeks) that I have has a feeling of about to shudder/jerk, where my shoulders will tense up, then no jerk emerges. Its a bit like wanting to sneeze but not being able to. i get repeated tension for a few mins in waves - eventually it will turn into a shudder/jerk. I cant make them happen. i have tried to create the shudder or tension by concentrating and it doesnt work! Im pretty sure i cant stop them either, but i can suppress them slightly: if i am sitting on my hands (which i do from tome to time) then when a shudder comes it is not strong enough to pull my arms out from under me. My shoulders simply shake a bit - sometimes my head will go back... not violently though. I know im being a bit detailed but, as i was just explaning to my husband, i dont tink a doc can diagnose me properly as it seems like such a weird sensation. In addition to this i have a few other neurological probs (tingling in left hand, accasional burning sensations in right arm and a few other things). I am booked in to see a neurologist in a few months. any ideas? kim
