My youngest niece had her first seizure yesterday...

And we are all terrified.  I was driving her and her two siblings home from school.  I noticed her moving funny.   She was bent over her backpack, leaning to her left side, and I thought she was being silly and dancing while looking for something in her backpack.  I asked her what she was doing.  When she didn't respond, I said her name louder, in case she didn't hear me or in case she was being silly and ignoring me, and didn't understand I was being serious.  When she didn't respond, I touched her, and knew immediately what was going on.  I slammed the car in park (luckily I was at a gas station) and got her brother to throw her seat back.  She was gurgling and wheezing when she breathed, and her lips were blue.  Thankfully, I've had basic life support training for work, and it kicked it, even though I was panicking.  I turned her to her side so the foam in her mouth would drain out.  After about 30 seconds, she started getting normal color again, but was disoriented and acted like she was intoxicated.

We rushed her to the ER via ambulance, and they couldn't didn't anything on the CT.  She mentioned this weekend that her lower abdomen was hurting, and she hasn't had her first period yet, so we figured it is time.  Now I am beginning to wonder if the two are connected, and this was a catamenial seizure.

We take her to the doctor today, and hopefully will have a cause and diagnosis soon.  Whatever the cause, it has the family scared and wondering what to do if it happens again.  Her big sister, who shares a room with her, told me today that she is scared her sister will have another seizure in her sleep and no one will hear her, or that no one will know what to do if it happens again.

Obviously, the entire family will get any education needed to be prepared if it happens again.   I would love to see what suggestions you have for this, as well as any suggestions you have for alarms/detection devices to help us when she sleeps.

Thank you so much!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and suggestions!  I apologize for not responding sooner.  When I logged in, it didn't show any comments were made from the topic page, and I didn't know until just now when I just randomly opened the topic. We received the results from her EEG today and they were abnormal, so she is going to a pediatric neurologist soon.  I pray this was an isolated incident, or, if not, that she can be regulated with medication.  I'm not sure if a specific diet would help, but if you know of anything like that, feel free to suggest away!We are currently looking into baby monitors and other monitoring devices, and are watching out for trigger objects.  The entire family will be educated on this, and first aid, which was a great suggestion!  Also, we are going to work with her school to educate her teachers and classmates on what to do if they are around her when one happens.Thank you again for your help!  I truly appreciate it!!
