My Child has BRE

Mon, 09/25/2006 - 22:25
HI, My daughter was diagnosed with BRE 4 months ago. She has had 3 seizures before she was put on medicine which is Trileptal which seems to be working for her. Her first two were worse thatn her 3 rd one. She vomits with her seizures and drools a lot. Hard for her to breath which is so scary to watch. Her first two where over 6 minutes and the third did not last as long. I would love to hear from any other Mom;s that children have the same disorder or any Mom's that children have outgrown this which is what out Dr.'s prognosis is. Thank you.

If you type in Benign

If you type in Benign Rolandic in the search box on the left, you will see lots of discussions on this topic. My 5 year old daugther was diagnosed with Benign Occipital Childhood Epilepsy in March. Her first seizure that we witnessed was in February and she sounded like she was going to throw up-- she did not and then she stared off for about 7 minutes. They happen in her sleep in the middle of the night. Very frightening! The doctor said it was either BOCE or BRE but decided BOCE. They are similiar with some difference but with the same prognosis of outgrowning it. My husband's brother had a form of E as a child (we don't know if it was BOCE or BRE or either) and he outgrew it. How old is your daughter? Do they happen in the day or the night?

Hi, Thank you for your information. I hope ypu are getting this email. My daughter is 8 and we did not get a good reaing on her first EEG. The DR. has ordered another but for us the time has not been right. I am going to do it over Xmas break because I know you know about the sleep deprivation. My silly child can never fall aleep in uncomfortble surroundings. That is intersestin about the BOCE because she stares into space forever it seems. Also, I have learned that some family memeber like cousins have the full blown E. So, I am thankful for yours and mine prognosis and am praying that it is a true prognosis. I apologize for my spelling mistake!! I tend to write faster than I think I can.

Yes, the sleep deprivation is definitely an issue-- a trigger for seizures. As to having trouble falling asleep at the EEG, did your doctor suggest keeping her up really late the night before and then waking her up really early and then scheduling it for early morning. That worked for us. I actually ended up falling asleep with her at the EEG. We also did a 24 hour which is when the doc decided it was BOCE instead of BRE. The staring part was so scary. I have witnessed it once and I was in a panick because at the time I did not know what was going on. Why is the doc doing another EEG if he has a diagnosis?
