My 11 year old daugther, new the site and siezures

Hi! I am new to this site. I found it a few days ago though web search. I would like to share my story with you since I am new to this whole seizure thing, and maybe some advice. My 11 year old daughter Shelbie had her first seizure in Aug. She has had 3 since. The 3rd one was just 2 days ago. When she had her first one it was so scary. My 8 year old just had ear surgery the day before. We were eating breakfast in the hospital room. Shelbie and I were sitting across from each other sharing a muffin. The next thing I remember Shelbie was leaning backwards on her chair. At first I thought she was trying to look at the TV behind her. Her arm that was close to the tray started to hit the tray. I ran to her and her face looked odd. We yelled for the nurses, and they all knew what to do. They told us she was having a seizure. WOW!!!! They took her to the ER where they did an EEG which showed she is prone to seizures. She was started on topamax. She was taking 50mg in the morning and 50mg in the evening. She left the hospital in a good mood, but she slept most of the day when we go home. Everything was back to normal the next day. For the next few months she was doing well. She did have small twitches that we think are small seizures, but other than that, she did well. We thought that maybe the seizure was a fluke. Until Nov 4th. Early Saturday morning around 5:30am, I noticed the hallway bathroom light on. It usually is not on this early. I waited a few minutes before I went to go check. I thought that maybe it was Jacob because a few days ago he had a morning accident and changed his clothes before I could help him. Anyway when I got to the bathroom, Shelbie was laying on the floor. I walked over to her and spoke her name, but she didn't responded. The first thing I thought was a seizure. About 10 minutes later, I was able to move her to her bed. My husband, Jeff, was at work, so he rushed home. I checked her head to see if she hit it when she fell, but I didn’t see anything. She seemed to wake up from this seizure pretty good. She ate breakfast at 7am. We made a bed on the floor for her to lay on. She fell asleep after she ate. About 9am she woke up and told me she was feeling better. About 9:30, she fell back to sleep. She woke up at 10:10 and at 10:15, she had another seizure. Her whole body shook. She started to turn blue. I called 911 at that time. This one lasted about 45 seconds. She went into a deep sleep after that. We called her name, but no response. By the time the paramedics got to the house, she was starting to come out of it. It scared her to see all these people around her. I did notice that she had a bruise on her side of her temple. That could have been when she fell in the bathroom. She was saying she had a bad headache. They decided to take her to the hospital. The CT came back normal. Her blood work came back normal. Her headache started to go away, so they sent us home. They did up her medicine to 75mg twice daily. They did state that if she has another one, they will up the evening dose to 100mg. She did pretty well the rest of the day. Things were back to normal on Sunday. Shelbie has been doing pretty good. The only thing that we have noticed is that she isn’t doing very well in school. She does have ADHD, and she takes Concerta for that. The school thinks she is forgetting things easily, which I think she might be having small seizures. They do notice that she twitches though out the day. She brought home her progress report card, and she is getting B,C, and D’s. This really isn’t anything different from last year. She is going to struggle in school. Well…she had another seizure this past Wednesday the 29. This one was pretty scary, because we were driving home from shopping. She shook pretty hard. This one lasted a minute. It happened at 730pm. When we got home, we laid her down. She was out of it for about an hour. When she came to, she was very confused. Within a few minutes, she was back to sleep. She woke up again about an hour later. We were able to give her topamax. We upped it to 100mg. She slept the rest of the evening. Jeff and I slept right beside her. Every time she moved, we woke up. It was so hard to sleep. The next day she was fine. She had a headache, but she wanted to go to school. I really didn’t want to send her, but she really wanted to go. I went to work, and about 1hr at work, the school called. Shelbie’s headache got worse. So I picked her up. She lay down for a little bit. Once she got up from her nap, she felt fine. She went to school today. So far so good. I know this is a lengthy letter, but I just wanted to tell my story. I also want any advice from people who know what I am going through. I just hate that there is no sign for these. She has a video EEG scheduled for 12/26. I don’t know what that is all about, so maybe someone can help with that. What will it show? I am scared to leave her, but I know she has to have a normal life. I feel I have to watch her all the time. Her little brother is upset about the whole thing too. He had to watch the seizure on Wednesday since it was in the car. I think it really scared him. I better stop for now. I hope someone out there can help or just talk about things to help me. Thanks! Mindy Roy Mooresville, IN Shelbie 11 be 12 on 12/22 Jacob 8

HI my name is Linda and i have lived with epilepsy for most of my life and i find that alot of my attacks are bought on by worry' which tends to make me think that your 11 year old was worried about your 8 year old, because of the operatin. They may have been really worried in side about this and therefore it brought on the first seizure. in case you were wondering i am 57 years of age now and i had my first seizures when i was 2, i had pheaumonia. Once the doctors have sorted your child out then they will be able to find a decent medication to control the seizures and then they will be able to lead a normal life. i hope that this has helped you in some way yours Linda.

HI. Having a VEEG is a really good idea. To find out more have a look at epilepsy.com, but basically it means your daughter will have an ongoing EEG while she is being videoed. The hospital normally gives quire a bit of information beforehand. They can be anything from 6 hours to one week long. It will give you an idea about whether she is having small seizure activity and night or during the day that you are not aware of, and help to define the type of seizure and where it might be all coming from - all this gives clues to what medication is more likely to help and long term outcomes. . And your not alone. My 11 year old had her first seizure ever at the beginning of this year, and sine then has had countless ones. They sound quite different from your daughter’s though, but it’s a hard time for all the family. Its also a hard age I think for them, when so many other things in their life and about their bodies and personalities are changing anyway, Good luck, and let me know how you all go.

Hi Mindy, I am Jeana. I am also new to the site. My 8 year old daughter Rebeka has seizures. She has had the small roll eyes ones since Feb of 05. But on 11-21-06 she had one that was the big one. She fell into the floor and we had to call 911. My 10 year old daughter seen it happen. So I know what you mean about other siblings having to see it happen. I agree with you, I hate to send her to school. I want to be with her every minute, but I know she has to live a normal life as possible. Rebeka also struggles in school. This year is much better than last. So far we have only had one D on our report card. I can't tell you about those video EEG's. But I can be here to talk about the seizures. We also go back on 12-26. We have to have a check up and make sure everything is ok. Jeana
