More seizures since began medication

Fri, 09/12/2014 - 21:21

Hi there

I have had absence seizures since I was a child and have always controlled the triggers so have not been on medication. I had my first grand mal 7yrs ago after a miscarriage.

Last year I had another grand mal so spoke with a neurologist who put me on Keppra which was great. 2 months in I had another seizure and fell backwards splitting my head open. I had another seizure after being stitched but we put that down to trauma.

My keppra dosage was increased and after getting through the side effects I thought I was getting better, but I have just had another seizure, possibly brought on by the 2 glasses of wine and not enough sleep.

Could the increase in seizures be because of the head trauma (MRI is fine)? It doesn't make sense to me that I have now had more seizures since starting medication than ever before?  I am now getting anxious and stressed as I don't know the triggers anymore and do not feel that just increasing my dosage will make a difference.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Your body changes over a

Your body changes over a period of time. If you thought you were getting better after starting the keppra then raising the dosage may be all that is needed. Triggers change over time too. A couple of glasses of wine shouldn't affect you that much unless your dosage is too low and it also depends on the time between those glasses. You will have some docs who say no alcohol and you will hear others say a drink now and then will not hurt. All a glass of wine will do is change the amount of medication in your system so limiting it to a glass every 2-4 hours. Oh and that galss should be about 8 oz. The same with a beer now and then just limit it and you should be fine. I am no doctor but I have had both wine and beer and Doc says limiting them will not hurt. As for keppra.... Well it is the best medication I have ever used in the 502+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy Oh you might want to make sure your dosages are being taken 12 hours apart if yo utake them 2 times a day. If you are taking them at 7 am and 9 pm the hours between 7 & 10 the dosage will be lower then the amount the doctors want and that can cause break thru seizures. I hope this helps and you get the dosages set and get seizure free again.
