Keppra to treat aggression?

Fri, 12/08/2006 - 06:54
My 10 year old daughter has Autism, epilepsy and severe learning difficulties. She is on tegretol, epilim and risperdal. Since the introduction of Tegretol over 2 years ago she has been seizure free, however her behaviour has become very erratic and she has extremely violent outbursts. Risperdal was prescribed and has helped her communication, but not her violent outbursts. It is thought that she is still experiencing seizure activity in her frontal lobes which causes outbursts of aggression. Our specialist thinks that sometimes when seizures are stopped the patient does not get the relief from the seizure, instead there is lots of interference in that area of the brain. If this interference is in the frontal lobes then behaviour problems can occur. Our specialist is considering changing form Tegretol to Keppra to try to combat this. I am abit worried because Keppra can cause behavioural problems. Has anyone any similar experiences they can share with me?

Hi, I'm 32 years old & only epileptic. Minor absence seizures & complex partials. University educated in one field, work in another. I was on Tegretol from age 16-27 it worked ok for me. I've always been on Clobazam 10mg with my meds since age 16. At age 27 they switched me over to Topomax. This past June I started on Keppra (with intent of taking away Topomax). For now, I'm on all 3. Dunno if Keppra is something I'd recommend for a little kid. It made me really "edgy" at first and still does at times. There were days I thought of killing other people & myself. Read up in the "Medications" section. Keppra to counteract agression?? Not one I'd pick? Clobazam is a med in the same family as valium, sure u feel like a zombie, but it works awesome for seizures for me, is the cheapest med I've been on, and other than tired, the side effects are minimal. Hope that helps. ~ EC

I am currently trying to get off of Keppra. Keppra caused some real problems for me with depression, and made me very very tired. Keppra is getting a lot of attention from neurologists and patients lately because of UCB Pharma's advertising. It works great for some people, but with the risk for depression and mood disorders and weight gain, is not the best for everyone. I suppose the same is true for any drug. I would say that Keppra would be a bad choice to combat the aggression. Perhaps a benzodiazepine such as Klonopin? An idea, anyways.
