Just want to say hello

Tue, 09/12/2006 - 12:35
Hello everyone, I am new to the site, although I have it bookmarked. I have been diagnosed with grand mal epilepsy. I had petit mal seizures when I was about 18 months old. I don't remeber them as I was so young. My parents had me in Easter Seals and were told that I could either wind up retarded, normal or very bright. I have an IQ of about 128 or 130 so I guess they weren't totally wrong. Anyway, my mom would give me phenobarbitol when i would have these absence seizures. I would stare into space then start crying. The seizures stopped when I was about 2 years old. I had been seizure-free, or so I thought. I had been struggling with a drinking problem since 2001. In October 2004, I had 3 grand mal seizures and was rushed to the hospital. I spent a few days in the hospital. it was believed that they were caused by alcohol withdrawal and mixing alcohol with Wellebutrin. I was taken off the Wellebutrin. I had grand mal seizures again in July 2005. I had been taking Sudafed to deal with my allergies. i was also drinking a lot of Coke. It seems the caffeine and pseudoephedrine caused the seizures, but it can't be proved. My tests came back normal, even though I had a seizure while at the hospital when I was wheeled in for a CAT scan. My neurologist then ordered an ambulatory EEG. I had one at the end of August 2005 and it showed abnormal activity, especially at night. The activity was in my temporal lobe. I did some research and learned about simple partial seizures and realized that I've had those all my life. This year in July, I had several partial seizures. I noticed it was around the time of my monthly cycle. My neurologist told me to keep track of when I get them. Today, I've had several simple partial seizures and my "friend" is late. (No, I'm not preggers, trust me.) I began taking Neurontin a couple years ago as a mood stabilizer. My neurologist then upped the dose to 900 mg. (300 mg. 3x a day. I was on 600 2x daily) I'm also on Lexapro and Strattera. I have been on them since I was in rehab back in May. I was previously on Effexor XR. (We think the Effexor just "petered" out because I had been on it for a few years.) Anyway, sorry for the long winded intro. I just wanted to give some background. Oh, it's weird. I find myself almost enjoying the weird deja vu, numb feeling I get during a seizure. Sometimes I wish it'd last longer than a couple minutes, but it's best to be careful what you wish for. Take care.
