information on Lamictal

I have a 10 year old son who has been taking Lamictal for the past several months for rolandic epilepsy. He has been having more seizures in the past few months so we've been increasing the medication. I've noticed that he seems more irritable and easily upset than usual. Not sure if it's the medication or just him. Anyone out there with experience with Lamictal? His neurologist says that there are basically no noticeable side effects with Lamictal. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Christine I used to take lamictal but not anymore. I didn't like it. It had bad side effects on me. I have heard it can be a good drug but for me,well it was not for me. It didn't stop my seizures or auras. I got more headaches. I became depressed and had anxiety attacks now and then. It was horrible. Didn't suit me at all. I came off it end of last year. I'm much better now. I dont cry for no reason anymore. My anxiety is pretty much gone, hardly ever there now. Lamical made my anxiety worse than it actually was. Your son is 10 years old. Why dont you try talking to him about it if you can when he is in a good mood and see what he thinks? Then you can all decide together what is best for him. Quirky

My daughter is 14 and her absence seizures began at age 9 and she was just diagnosed with JME last year. She was on Lamictal for several years with good control, but when she hit puberty, she had breakthrough grand mal seizures and the Lamictal was increased to 200 mg 2x a day. This gave her severe dizzy spells and trouble sleeping. She was also very emotional. We are weaning her from Lamictal and is now on 100mg of Lamital and 100 mg of Topamax 2x a day, but loss of concentration and motivation is noticable. She also had severe vomiting attacks about 2 nights a week. We think it is due to the combo of meds. I beleive all patients are affected differently and side effects are noticable for many. Many neurologists think Lamictal is the drug of choice, but it isn't the right one for my daughter right now.

I have been on lamictal for about 8 years maybe? Anyway the biggest side affect that I notice is if I don't eat with it my eyes go blurry and I get really nauseated. I am not sure but I think that with all the meds it causes drowsiness so in a sense we are tired and irritable. My parents have been telling me that now for 23 years and they laugh and say it isn't the meds. I am on 6 meds altogether, which is alot I know, but I have been seizure free for 3 years. Maybe talk to your doc about adding a new med? I am not familiar with Rolandic epilepsy bc I have grand mal and we all react so differently to meds but maybe this is something to consider. It took 20 years and every single drug out there in order for the doctors to get the right combo to work just right for me. Don't give up and bear with him. He needs all the love he can get right now. I wish you the best. Heather "I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it." Maya Angelou
