I'm new

I want to begin by introducing myself. My name is shell, and I got here because of my daughter. She is 10 yrs. old, and I'll be taking her to a Pediatric Neurologist next month. We have reason to believe she is having Absense Seizures, and I'm scared to death. I went online, and everything points to Epilepsy and this site. So I thought I better join. Is there anyone out there who experienses Absense Seizures? If so, can you please give me some information or point me in a direction so when we go to this doctor I'll have some idea what he's telling me? It would be much appreciated. -Shell

Hi, I too have a son who will be going to see the ped neuro, but not until May. While Zakry has had several grand mal seizures, he also has other types. He does have what we (me, my husband, his teacher, and his ped doc) believe to be absence seizures as well. One thing that I just learned, and I don't know exactly how acurate it is, but supposedly, when a person has an absence seizure, their eyes dialate. Also, your daughter could be experiencing complex partial seizures. This can look like an absence seizure, but usually they do some repetitive motion like chewing (my son does this) or picking or some children will even keep "playing" with the toy that they are holding while they stare off. Usually my son has a postictal period after these seizures where he is a little out of it. Watch for her eyes and her response afterwards. I feel like I am in the same boat as you, waiting and can barely stand it! I wish you the best and I will be happy to share any more of my story or information I have gathered as a parent in the same boat as you if you wish! Good Luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, and I wish the best to you and yours. We went for the EEG a couple of days ago, and now I'm waiting to hear on the reading. Right now I keep myself busy and talking to teachers to get as much history on her as I can for the doctor. I will post whatever info I get and maybe I can help. -Shell

Hello, I seem to be in the same boat as you. My 7 year old son's teacher pointed out to me the other day that she thinks my son may be having absence seizures in the classroom. We are going to see his doctor next week about it. I have never noticed one but I am now starting to watch him closely. What brought you to the doctor, did you notice them yourself? How often was it happening? Also have you received your results from the tests yet. I'm sorry for so many question, but like you I had never heard of this before and it is making me very nervous. Thank you for any help you can give.
