How long do EEG's typically take?

Fri, 03/31/2006 - 12:13
I'm scheduled to have an EEG next month to try to figure out where my partial seizures are happening. The neurologist who scheduled it did not tell me how long they'll want me there. He said I should do what ever I can to trigger a seizure and they will try to help with that too. But do they usually just keep you there until you have one? I wish I had discussed this with the Doctor, but I just didn't think it was going to be some drawn out test until I read about someone else having a 4 day long EEG. I have a hard time getting information from the incredibley irritable receptionist at the Neuro office.

Yes they will keep you there. But they will decrease your meds or sleep deprive you, so you have a seizure sooner. You could decrease your sleep in advance too. best of luck lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

EEG telemetry to record a person's seizures can last from a few days to more than a week or so, depending on the availability of equipmemt, how the person tolerates the testing, and the person's seizures. Sometimes seizures occur quicker or more frequently, othertimes they take a while to get recorded. Ask the doctor's office for more info and see if there is a nurse available in that office to help prepare you for the testing. Here is a link to general information about EEG testing.
