Hi, I'm Diana.

hi everyone,

I figured I'd tell a little bit about myself and open up to advice or comments. My name is Diana and I'm 24 years old. I had my first ever seizure in March, 2014. Although my neurologist has done multiple MRIs and EEGs, no explanation has been found.

The night before my first seizure I skipped dinner because I had a late lunch. My husband and I spent the night with my brother and sister-in-law drinking and celebrating a birthday. We got home late that evening and I got sick almost immediately. I had 3 or 4 beers and a shot of liquor. We went to bed and I went to work the next day feeling pretty crummy, I made through almost my whole shift, I was about to leave about 3:30pm when I felt the "aura" and fell to the ground. The next thing I remember is being in an ambulance and being told I had suffered a seizure.

Now, I'm sure everyone knows how it goes when you're rushed to the emergency room and the doctors do all of the CAT scans and stuff, well, on the way to my CAT scan, I suffered from a second seizure. The doctors at this hospital insisted I start 2000mg of keppra per day, so I did.

Over the next couple of months my doctor lowered my dosage of keppra to 1000mg per day, which made me happy because it made me feel awful. We did more MRIs and EEGs, but still not explanation. Eventually I went a whole year without another seizure, I cut back my drinking, but I didn't stop completely, but I was starting to think I was ok! Maybe it was a one time thing, that all the circumstances came together for total disaster, at least that's what my doctor thought!

So, after a year of no seizures, my doctor agreed to ween me off the Keppra. I've been off of it for 5 months now and everything was going great. I was finally starting to feel like myself again, my headaches were less and less, the little voice in the back of my head telling me "what if you have a seizure while you're driving!?" got quieter. And then Monday night happened, I was awoken in the middle of the night by an aura, and I woke up at 6am on the floor. I had a huge knot on my forehead, a purple lip, and blood on my face.

This night I had also had 4 beers and ate dinner very early. It seems to be a pattern for me, but my nuerologist doesn't seem to think it's significant.

I am so unbelievably frustrated that this happened again. I'm so sad, and angry! I thought I was normal again, I was starting to feel okay! My nuerologist started me on Lamotrigine (Lamictal) and so far I feel okay. But I'm so so so so bummed.

I am open to any advice or comments you may have, anything to help ease the disappointment. Thanks!

You are not the only person

You are not the only person that has gone some time without a seizure only to have one again.I went 3+ years without a seizure and Doc and I were thinking and discussing weaning me off meds. Before we started I had a seizure which was a focal seizure and burned myself bad. So we worked at getting the medications set again. I had to stop working for 6 months. I still have a seizure now and then but because of the newer medications I can have one while discussing something with you and you would not know anything about it. I have a cousin who has gone years without a seizure and she has a family. drives and has her own business working in th health business. But she still takes meds. It all depends on what happens to each and every person and how they handle their problem or issue. For you it has been 14 months since you first had your seizure. You have this web site which can help you learn more about your condition. This forum has lots of things that can help. Sure it is bumming or setting you back a little. How would you feel if it had been a heart attack? Or diateties, or any other ailment that can't be seen? Also think about your meds and the RX. If it is taken 2 times a day then those times need to be 12 hours apart. If they arent then your theraputic levels can be off which can cause a break thru seizure. If yo u like your neurologist tehn ask questions during the visit. For every question he asks me I have at lease 2 for him. If you don't ask questions he will think everything is fine and just keeps things like they are. I have used almost all the medications listed on the charts in their offices. If I still had seizures I wanted to know if there was another medication that might get my seizures under better control. I wanted to know if there was a medication that could be coupled with the one I was taking that might get the seizures under better control. I wanted to know if there were other procedures that might help with control. So Doc and I discussed more and by doing that I have fewer seizures and better control of the ones I was having. The seizures have been reduced and the time in them is shorter. I hope this helps and you do get your seizures under control and get seizure free Joe
