Getting your license back before 3 months?

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 19:33
Hello, I'm 20 and just had my second seizure. Both were from taking drugs then overheating and dehydrating. The first happened 2 years ago, the second happened this month and the paramedics were called. The doctor had to report so now I can't drive. They told me to drive again I needed to be cleared by a neurologist but they did not specify if I would have to be cleared AND wait the 3 month period or just be cleared. Does anyone know how "mandatory" the 3 month period is? Let's say for example my neurologist decides I'm perfectly fine to drive, would I still have to wait? I live in California.

Each state has it's own time

Each state has it's own time line. Laws are written and those timelines are in the laws. Doctors fill out paperwork which revokes your license or lets the DMV remove and lets you drive again. If the neurologist thinks you don't have epilepsy then he can fill out papers telling the DMV that you can drive again. However the neurologist may look at the number of times you had seizures and want tests or other information so a diagnosis can be made. All it takes to diagnose epilepsy is 2 seizures. So get with a neurologist and see what they think and can do.

I believe in California is

I believe in California is one year, but I may be mistaken. There is a section on this website about DMV guidelines by state. This is how it works: the suspension starts from the time your seizure is reported. You should have received a letter with instructions, but in short, your license is medically suspended UNTIL you are seen by a neurologist AND only when he/she decides you are first enough to drive. Further more, the paperwork states that you must be a patient with that doctor for at least six months ( in my state anyway) . The paperwork also asks what diagnostic tests have you received and the treatment that you are receiving. If you are new to a particular  treatment or condition , then additional paperwork will be required every six months, and then yearly after that. Yes, every single year, or more often if you get more episodes.
