First time seizure and meds?

Tue, 08/30/2016 - 20:17
I had a first time seizure about 2 months ago. The neurologist can't find the cause, but wants to put me on meds to be on the safe side. He says it was unprovoked. I'm not convinced and don't want to go on meds. Wouldn't you consider the following provoked? Has anyone else been advised to go on meds after only 1 seizure? Expereinces? Thoughts? Provoked or Unprovoked? 1. I slept very little the night before as I was researching on the computer. 2. Heavy menstruation 3. Taking Bupropion which is known to reduce the seizure threshold (although for about 1 yr+) 4. Just finished Docycline which also has been known to lower the seizure threshold (I think) 5. Just finished hiking, although not strenuous when seizure occured (blood sugar not low)

OKlack of sleepmenstruation cycleThe fires is a trigger for seizures.. If yo ugo into the women with epilepsy yo would see that many women have seizures during their periodsThe  medication you took can cause seizures in seizure prone people. So it might have caused yours. But that doesn't mean you don't have epilepsy. Not eberybody with eplepsy has a cause. They can go thru testing and all come back normal. I had 20-25 different EEG;s that came back normal. then I had one in which I fell asleep in that came back with abnormalites. U+Yup they found spikes or waves aka seizure activity in the left lobes of my brain. The neurologists then went to the MRI and looked closer in that area and found scared brain tissue. So for me they found a cause. Have you ever hit your head really hard that might have knocked you out? A blow to your head can cause a hemoragh to the brain. That hemoragh can then cause scar tissue. That scar tissue can make electrical impulses hit wrong in your brain. The start of a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in yor brain. The seizure itself is the chain reaction caused by that electrical impulse hitting wrong..All of the 5 things you listed can be done by any of us that have epilepsy. I climbed montainsI also took medicatins that can cause seizures in some people. MEn also have hormones and yes they can cause problems for us at times. Sleep is a biggir to many people. Some people can't get on a computer becasue the changing of a page can cause a seizure Photosensitivity. If it were me I would start th medication and have the tests donw like the EEG and others the neurologists thnks may need to be done. Like I posted if after awhile you donet have seizures they can take you off the medications

I agree with laurathegirlUndergo some tests, see a neurologist...they will probably recommend medication but read up about that also, the side effects can often be brutal...and those triggers like sleep, eating, menstrual, dehydration, read those signs, be careful around those time etc...
