Diagnosed this morning

Sat, 10/21/2006 - 03:52
Hi all, So apparently I've been having seizures since I was 12. My neurologist diagnosed me this morning. I guess it's good to have a name for what's been going on (it's really freaky the way epilepsy/seizures explains nearly every thing that has been going on), but it's kind of scary to find out that it's this. I'm 22, married, graduating from ASU in December, and looking to start a career in Real Estate or Marketing. My husband and I also want to start having kids in the near future (2-3 years). I don't know how this will effect things. I realize that I'm not alone in this, but I've never known anyone with seizures and after spending all day researching them I feel like I still know very little. I guess I'm looking for comfort from those that have been in my shoes. I'm pretty scared and I really want to be strong. My husband worries about my health and now has good reason to. Also, I am starting Lamictal (took my first pill a few hours ago). Any thoughts on this drug? If you had a reaction to it do you have other drug allergies that might be related? Thanks! Channing

Hi Channing, Lamictal seems to be a good medicine that works well for many people. Kinda new to all this myself At 43 years old. And trying to figure it all out. Stay strong Channing, i have found that it is easy to let yourself be dragged down by the negitive thinking and self pity that you will find on some of these sites, but you can also find some great information from informed upbeat people. I am just trying to say we are all different, and some of the stuff you read can leave you even more concerned, worried and scared about your own condition. good luck rise up and stay strong. Kyle

Kyle, Thanks so much for the words of encouragement. I totally agree. Some of the info I'm finding is so negative that it freaks me out even more. It's nice to talk to other people with the same issues. I think what scares me the most about it is that I have never known any one with it and it is so foreign to me. Thanks, again! Channing

Hello Channing, I can relate to your situation because I've taken the same path. I tried 9 diff. anti's & had a intoreable reaction with several anti's including Lamicital. Keep in mind this does not mean you will. I am 43, a single parent & started w/partial szrs around age 12. Not fully diagnosed until my mid-20's. In the early 80's a misinformed neuro told me "people like me should not have children" I refused to believe & found genetic counseling w/compasionate & knowledgable doc. You may want to consider this too. He said E would not soley be a reason to rule out children. The biggest lesson E has taught me is that fear and uncertainty exists in everything we do it is not exclusive to E but by "empowering" youself with good info & choosing to have supportive people around you it will make make dark days "light"er. Wishing you a fountain of "well"ness very soon! Sherri
