Developed epilepsy??

Wed, 12/16/2015 - 12:23

Hey y'all. I was diagnosed with epilepsy about 2.5 years ago. This is going to be a long post, I have tried researching to see if any one has experienced similar episodes but have not found anything. So here we go. I was 19 working full time as an EMT. I was steady working a 24/12 schedule, which means I would work 24 hours straight, off for 12 and then do 24 again. I lived at home with my parents and being new to the area didn't have any thing else to do. I did this for a good bit. I started drinking heavily on my nights off. bout 6 months into this I had my first seizure. It was a grand mal and I had it while at a training session. I was sent to the ER where I was released shortly after. When I woke up that morning I felt like off. I wasn't able to concentrate and could not hold a conversation. I had the seizure at somewhere between 3 and 5 in the afternoon. I returned to work with no problems. The doctor pretty much told me since this was the first time I had ever had a seizure that it was most likely cause by the excessive alcohol.  About 6 months later I had another, with the same exact feeling from before. Again I didnt have the seizure until the late afternoon.  I told my employer that I had a drinking problem, my neurologist at the time again said it was because of the drinking.  I enrolled in AA and completely quite drinking. Approximately 6 to 7 months later I had another seizure. My employer fired me. I got a job with a private ambulance company that did not require me to drive. I have had another 2 seizures with the same exact feeling. I wake up and I know I'm going to have a seizure. I have about 12 hours before it actually happens.  I have accepted the fact that I will never work for a 911 service again, but I can not stand to do private service. I just don't understand how I can developed epilepsy out of no where. I have no family history of anything like this. I have had every study done and they all come back normal. Everything I have been taught as an EMT says that an aura happens a short time before the seizure itself. I just refuse to believe that I have epilepsy. I gained a lot of weight working in EMS, I don't know if that has anything to do with this. I also started smoking, but quite that and now use smokeless tobacco. It almost feels to me like my body isn't processing something right and whatever it is builds up and eventually causes a seizure. I am just so lost and confused. I'm scared that I wont be able to pursue the career that I truly love, automotive repair. I am afraid that if I do have epilepsy I transferred it to my little girl who is 11 months old now. I just have so many questions. My new neurologist is awesome. She recommended that I start anti-epileptics, but truthfully I have seen first hand how some of those meds can turn people into zombies and I refuse to take something that will change who I am. I am very interested in CBD oil and have an appointment with my neuro to discuss it. This just doesn't sound like epilepsy to me, maybe I'm in denial. I am trying ot improve my diet to see if that has anything to do with it. Do you guys have any advice? Any suggestions?? I'm sorry if this was disorganized. Thank you in advance! Hoping to find some support here.
