Dealing with seizures .

Mon, 11/24/2014 - 12:14

My name is hanna . I am new to this , im 15 years old , and I have a 17 year old sister with epilepsy . She had her first seizure in 2007 . And she used to have one seizure a year utill 2014 . Now she has about 10 every three months . It is so hard for me ... I know its selfish , but It really is . I can't even have a normal night sleep anymore . 3 out of 7 days a week I wake up having nightmares about her having a seizure. We spend about $300 a month on her meds . And they don't even help . I feel so blessed that she has never hurt herself from falling . Maybe thats because we don't let her go anywhere alone . One of us is always with her . She had a seizure again this morning , and im really tired of it . I want to get her help .

Hanna you seem to think her medicines don't work at all. I started having seizures before I was your age. I wad diagnosed at 13 but had seizures which I didn't know were seizures for a few years before that. I was having more seizures then your sister is having. After taking medications the number of seizures went down. It took time to get the dosages set right and the number dropped farther. You posted she hasn't hurt herself. All all her seizures bad? I ask that because there are 40+ different types of seizures. I know what it is like having a convulsive seizure since I have had convulsive seizures but in mine I was aware of everything arround me. Medications can and do work at controlling seizures. I am blessed since I haven't had a convulsive seizure since 1970. I still have seizures but the seizures are controlled well enough to do what other people can do. Your sister needs to check with her neurologist to see if her medications need to be changed or the dosages need to be increased. As for you and your issues. You can call the 24/7 help line and talk to a person that can direct you to other people that can help you deal with your sister better. There are people that will just set and listen and help you understand what is happening or tell you what you should be doing. Your parents can also call the number and find answers to some of their questions. As for medications costing a lot. I was taking name brand medications and the ammount of one of them was more money then I took home  in 2 weeks pay. That medication is the best medication I have ever used in the 50+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy. I would rather pay for this medication then take the ones I was on since the seizures are now seconds long rather then being 5-15 minutes long. UI can have a seizure while talking to you and listening to you and you would know nothing about it. You see seizures change. As a teen mine were convulsive and bad. I still have the same types of epilepsy but with medications and changes of meds and dosages I can be considered controlled. Doc (my neurologist) knows that and so do I. But he knows I would love to be completely seizure free. You can find the 24/7 help line in the get help section or at the bottom of this page or any page I hope this helps and you get answers to your questions  and I hope your sister gets the assistance she needs Joe Amy Jo has posted it so please take her information to heart too
