Daydreaming or Epilepsy

How do you tell? I will give you a brief history so you will understand why I have been asked to watch for signs of seizure activity by our pedi. Josh, just turned 9, has a history of electrolyte imbalances and rapid dehydration consistent with addisons disease, he passed testing and for three years struggled through chronically low BP's, nausea, dizziness, mental confusion mainly in the mornings and evenings and fatigue. He had two different stim tests done and bloods drawn every 6 weeks for over a year before we just had bloods done when unwell. Nothing showed up. Over the past year, his BP has gradually improved to a normal, consistent level, nausea is no longer daily but may still be once or twice a week with sudden onset and lasts for approx 30-60 minutes and is more severe while it occurs. Mental confusion has increased to the point that he is struggling at school over the past 6 months. The last bout of severe nausea, with dizziness, sweating was accompanied with low hr of 50. Addison's is now ruled out. While the BP was low, the mental confusion/brain fog was understandable but now??????? Our pedi asked about any seizure activity and I said that I hadn't noticed any. He has had twitches before with the electrolye imbalances but as his electrolytes were off enough to cause convulsions this was not a concern. We were told to be aware and to look for any seizure signs. I thought I would do a search and see if there was anything I was missing or other signs of seizures that I did not know or my pedi did not mention (he didn't mention any that I was not aware of) The eye blinking rang alarms, I had his eyes tested about a year ago to see if he needed glasses as he would blink and squint and his eyes checked out fine. How do you know though whether he is just day dreaming (he can get the far away look) or if it is more? He seems to respond in a delayed way although there are many times he does not remember conversations. So many of the absence type seizuzre activities are things that ALL children can do, how do you know when to be concerned? I am at the stage where I don't know if I have been seeing seizures or not, I am watching him as closely as I can between school, work and caring for my mother (during chemo) and have noticed nothing since our appt the other day...isn't that typical? :) If I notice any signs of seizures I am to go back to our pedi, in the meantime we are getting a psych assesment done to try for fundng to assist him in school. I am so confused now with what is normal age appropriate zoning out and what is possible seizure activity. Any advice you can give will be much appreciated and if you made it through this far, thank you for reading it all :)

Have you talked to the doctor about confusional migraines? From what you have written he has a lot of the symptoms. Contrary to beleif he can have a confusional migraine but never actually have a headache, or if he does have one it can be insignificant. Headaches are actually just a symptom of a migraine. Below is a link to another forum regarding headaches & specifially confusional migraines in children. My neuro suspects this is what is happening w/me instead of seizures (some of the symptoms are the same) It is relatively common in children but very rare for adults (I'm 29). Hope this helps! http://www.migrainepage.com/dcforum/children/176.html

No I haven't, I read the link that you gave me and I don't "think" it fits with his symptoms. His BP drops to 90 over an hour while he feels unwell so is not the cause of the nausea and dizziness although it is interesting that the vasovagal nerve is involved as it can also be a cause of bradycardia. The fatigue and confusion are all day every day and is no worse or better after one of these attacks of nausea. When his BP's were low they were around 50/20 all of the time for three years, so a gradual drop to 90 is not anything either his dr's or I are overly concerned with. Our pedi's first reaction with looking at what I had written down was not that his hr dropped but "Wow, those BP's are really good" I know Josh wants his hearing tested as he says there are times he just doesn't hear, most of the time he hears perfectly, his brother who is autistic is also profoundly deaf in one ear as his brain is missing a neural pathway that takes the sound from the brain stem to the hearing processing areas. I have not noticed any of the same sort of hearing problems with Josh that his brother has. With Josh it is either he is able to hear or he is totally zoned out and takes ages for him to hear. Does that make sense? Oh, I get both abdominal and full blown migraines and have since I was a child, my eldest gets migraines and my HFA son also gets them w hich increases the risk for Josh. there seems to be no real migraine symptoms such as sensitivity to sound etc that are associated rather he gets the opposite. Thanks for this though, I will certainly keep it in mind. Sue, New and confused

Hi aussiemum, Let me see if

Hi aussiemum, Let me see if I can be of some help: Re: daydreaming vs seizures Here we can eliminate outwardly physical seizures, so (among the most prevalent types) are left with 3 types: simple partial: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_simplepartial.html possibly complex partial (as not all are externally obvious)http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_complexpartial.html absence: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_absence.html Given that signs are not always outward and that you have been asked about seizures by your physician, I would suggest you get it checked out asap as in the event your son has E, & needs the meds, it's best to get him on them asap. hope the links help, ~sol
