Is all this necessary?

My 3yo son has been having facial ticks and eye rolling (no fluttering) for the last few months so I took him to a pediatric neurologist. He did an in office EEG and then admitted him to the hospital for a 24hr video EEG and MRI. His MRI was normal but his EEG was abnormal and showed seizure like activity. The doctor wants to start him on Topamax and a very low dose. He has never actually had a seizure and we were told that he may never have one so I'm uneasy with him taking medicine for something that hasn't happened. I would appreciate any advice or support for or against taking the Topamax. I will also say that he has taken one dose and his ticks significantly increased in frequency, his face was itchy, and he was just acting a little odd and reaching for things that weren't there.

WelcomeThe tests are normal. The MRi is showing what the brain looks like. The EEG shows the electrical output comming from the brain. Now the neurologist saw abmormalities in his EEG. Abnormalities are seizure activity (waves ot spikes) which can cause a seizure. With the EEG informarion the neurologist will look closer in that area on the MRI looking for anything that is different in that area of the brain. An abnormal cell growth of anything. Whic could be the reason for his facial ticks. Yuo see there are seizures which are ticks in different areas of the body. There are other seizures that people have that look like the person is in a day dream. Been there done that. The neurologisst is doing what he thinks is best for his patient ie your son. Starting the medication can keep the facial ticks down or they can go away. Yes there are some people that have seizures like your sons and they grow out of them. Then there are others where they don't grow out and their ticks get faster and stronger. The neurologist kows what is best, If after a period of time your son hasn't had a seizure and another EEG is done and in that EEG there are no abnormalities then the neurologist would wean your son off meds. Which is what happened to my cousin. If this were my son I would be getting the RX filled and follow the directions. If taken 2 times a day those times should be 12 hours apart. Good luck and I hope your son gets seizure free Joe
