Alcohol Provoked Seizures

Sat, 09/24/2016 - 00:58
Hi all, I've been reading up and down the forums but can't seem to find a post about my specific situation. I am a male, 27 years of age and to date I have had 3 seizures. One in 2011, another in 2013 and recently one in 2016. All seizure have occurred the day after heavy drinking and specifically right after a night/morning of vomiting. Just as a background, I rarely drink heavily and my average consumption of alcohol has always been 1 or 2 drink a night every other week or so. I can say I've definitely never had more to drink than I have the days before my seizures, for me heavy drinking was having about 5-6 drinks in each episode. In 2011 after my first episode, I had a CT scan done only, everything was fine, I was told it may have just been an alcohol provoked/withdrawal seizure, although they were not sure, and chances are it will not occur again as epilepsy. Was sent on my way home. No seizures in between. In 2013 when I had my second episode, again right after vomiting all night I had further tests done including MRI, AWAKE EEG, BLOOD TEST, Heart EKG. Results came back normal, I was told I do not have signs of Epilepsy and to just take it easy on the drinking. No Seizures in between. Fast forward 3 year, early 2016 had another seizure, again after right after a morning of vomiting. Contrast MRI done, EEG done and my neurologist says everything has come back normal and I don't have Epilepsy, and to completely stop drinking which I have. Has anyone ever faced similar episodes and still not diagnosed with Epilepsy? Again I have never had a "random", non-alchol provoked, seizure before Also was wondering at what point, would epileptic medication be necessary for someone who is having these rare episodes?

All seizure have occurred the day after heavy drinking___ I can say I've definitely never had more to drink than I have the days before my seizures, for me heavy drinking was having about 5-6 drinks in each episode.<<< You posted your normal ammount is 1-2 drinks so which is it 5-6 or 1-2In 2011 The CT scan shows what something looks like. If it lookedgood then they would send you on your way.In 2013 Blood tests were fine. In other words no drugs or issues that might cause seizures, EKG shows the activity from your heart. The MRI shows what they took it of, If the brain it had nothig on it that wouldn't be on everybody elses. Now to the EEG. It is a brain wave test showing the electrical activity coming from your brain. Yours came back normal but it was also a short one. Fast forward to 2016 Anothe MRI and another EEG and they came back noremal. Did you tell the neurologist about the other seizures is a question that needs to be asked. Was teh neurologist you talk about a specialist in epilepsy? If not then you might want to find one that is and do tell them about all these episoded. I say that because you could be having seizures and not know it. There are many different types of seizures and some last seconds.Has anyone faced similar episodes?? Well yes and No. I was having seizures and didn't know it. I had a grand mal at school. The doctor I was going to did EEG.s and all came back normal. The number of EEG's that were done was between 20-25. I had been put on meds after the grand mal. I went thru a battery of tests and all had come back normal. The last test that weeks was another EEG. During that EEG I fell asleep in. That is the first EEG that came back with abnormalities. By seeing where they came from the neurologists tehn went to the MRI of the 60's and looked closer in that  area and they found scared brain tissue. So having all the tests does not mean you do not have epilepsy. At what point would someone need to be taking medicatins?? You asked because you rarely have them. Well rarely does not mean you will never have them again. Thik about you and driving and having one. Could you have an accident? Could you hurt yourslf or someone else? A neurologist that specializes could tell you more..
