8 year old son had an MRI done and was diagnosed with transmantle FCD

Wed, 03/08/2017 - 23:27
My son has been having migraines since he was 4 years old and he had some of what I thought were auras to his migraines, although in these instances never developed into migraines. He had his mouth go numb and has had episodes of pallor and weakness, he also had an episode of hearing a loud bang which he said no one else heard. His pediatrician sent him for a MRI just to cross her t's and dot her i's. Well his MRI came back showing transmantle Focal cortical dysplasia in his left frontal lobe. My GP said this might mean that he is having seizures outside of his migraines. I was just wondering if he could have this and not be having seizures?

it is quite possible. it will

it is quite possible. it will need more follow up with a seizure specialist, ideally an epileptologist. an eeg, or a few eegs, may help identify some issues (NB clear eegs do not rule out epilepsy).

Your GP know more then most

Your GP know more then most people.Understand that FDC  is a congenital abnormality of brain development. What you need to do is find a neurologist that specializes in epilepsy and discuss this issue with them. The main tests for epilepsy are the EEG and an MRI. The EEG is a brain wave test showing the electrical output coming from the brain. What starts a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in the brain. If they are seen in a EEG then they see abnormalities, spikes or waves, AKA as epileptiform or seizure activity. The EEG is the first tests done generally. If abnormalities are seen in the MRI they know where they came from and the neurologists will look at that area in the MRI. So anything different on the brain or it's development can cause the electrical impulse to hit wrong. For me it was scar tissue from a blow to my head when I was 6-8.So get a referral to a neurologist from the GPI hope this helpsJoe
