6 years old abnormal EEG, but no seisures. Help me understand!

Mon, 08/21/2006 - 23:29
My 6 years old son had abnormal EEG and his neurologist told us that he does not have seisures, he just has tics. The EEG report says he has very frequent epileptiform discharges during drowsiness and sleep from the centrotemporal areas of both sides brain. Does anyone knows what does his EEG means? Does anyone had this experience with abnormal EEG and no seisures? I am concerned about my son, he is doing things like tics almost every day. What realy concerns me is the first a couple of days of the symptoms where he lost his bladder control and seemed tired all day, stares alot. Does seisures look like tics? and come every day? Can somebody help me understand what is going on with my kid. Desperate Mom looking for answeres.

Hi,

There are several forms of epilepsy. Your son apparently is having those tics, caused by the discharges in his brain.

I have had several smal seizures every single day of my life since I was 14 years old (I'm 32 years old now), and some doctors didn't took me seriously because they are not tonic-clonic seizures... but all of them are seizures and affect my life.

You and your doctor have to decide how much does this tic affect his life's quality, and which could be the appropriate medication.

I hope everything will go better with your boy

My nephew was recently diagnosed w/Tourette Syndrome and it is a neurological disorder just different then epilepsy.  With Tourettes my nephew will just twitch out of nowhere.  My sister-in-law has found though that during times of stress it is worse (school, holidays etc).  This is also the syndrome where they can shout out obscenities at random.    My daughter has epilepsy so my sister-in-law was more aware of neurological issues in the family.
