14 Year Old Daughter with 1 grand mal and lots of little seizures

Tue, 11/21/2006 - 01:35
My 14 year old daughter had a grand mal seizure out of the blue about a year ago. She recovered completely (we thought), but (without telling anyone) continued to have almost daily auras and an occasional 10-20 second "absence" seizure. She then had one 30 minute absence seizure that sent us to a neurologist, where MRI and EEG revealed seizure activity associated with the hippocampus area of her brain. The neurologist prescribed Trileptal, starting with 150mg twice a day, and escalating to 450mg twice a day. She was fine for several weeks (other than an occasional aura) but recently experienced another "medium-sized" absence seizure while on the medication....a big disappointment. We are headed back to the neurologist...any similar stories out there, ideally with happy endings?

Make sure her sodium level is checked when on Trileptal. http://www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_trileptal_serious.html I just got off of it. I have been on it for four years now. It caused me to have generalized seizures when I only get complex partial. I got more auras, that is how I knew I was having low sodium from the meds. take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Hi & welcome, I don't like

Hi & welcome, I don't like to sound negative, but as a parent, IMO ,you need to know that even those 'auras' your daughter was having are seizures. 'Aura' is merely the name given to simple partial seizures if/when they occur immediately before a complex partial or a generalized seizure. "Aura: A warning before a seizure; NB-> a simple partial seizure occuring within seconds before a complex partial or secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizure, or it may occur alone; also a warning before a migraine headache." http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/glossary.html I'd politely recommend you search out an epileptologist for your daughter. Neurologists are specialists in the entire brain and spinal column whereas epileptologists are neurologists that focus on, and specialize in, the over 40 types of epilepsy. I began having seizures at 3 and went to many neurologists (no luck (& decades passsed) but after I saw an epileptologist.. I was soon controlled for the first time in my life. wishing you and your daughter the best, ~sol
