Unique situation, other meds, no insurance...

Tue, 07/12/2011 - 13:40

Hello everyone, my name is Vincent and I'm new to the community. I have a unique situation and I'm just trying to figure out my best course of action. I'm 31 years old, I had my first siezure when I was 4 as a result of a high fever. I didn't have my second siezure until I was 19 and that was a few days after using the drug ecstacy/MDMA. Since I'm 19 I've had about 16 siezures, everyone has followed a known trigger, whether it was no sleep, drug use/withdrawl, skipping my meds, high fever ect. ect.

I was prescribed tegretol when I was 21 and was basically siezure free as long as I took my meds and avoided known triggers. When I was 26 I injured my hand and became dependant on vicodin. I tried to stop numerous times with varying success. I was put on methadone, nturns out, the tegretol weakened the methadone so little by little I stopped taking my tegretol all together. Finally I was put on a medication called suboxone which treats opiate dependence which I am still on, I went 3.5 years with no tegretol and no siezures. In August of 2010 I had my first siezure in years, within the last 10 months I've had 2 more siezures, I always have unmistakable aura's and almost always know when its going to happen. My problem is I have NO insurance, I'm affraid I'm going to go to a Nuerologist, which is going to cost me cash 250$-300$ and there not going to want to treat me for a lack of knowledge about the suboxone.

So my question is what do you guys think my best course of action is going to be?

Obviously I have to be on some knid of siezure medication, I just dont want to go to a Nuerologist, and pay them upward of 250$ just for them to send me to the hospital for tests, or to another Dr.  for lack of knowledge about the suboxone. My anxiety is also now getting out of control because every dizzy spell or change in awareness I experience my first thought is "is this an aura"?

So I most likely need to see a physciatrist as well....

So what would you guys do?

I'm most likely going to go to the ER, I can have all the tests done and at least get a perscription for the tegeretol. I can then follow up with a neurologist/physcyatrist

thanks in advance for any advice

Vincent

As far as the no insurance and neurologist, check and see if there is a free clinic.  I have been told that my neurologist goes to a free clinic one day a week for people with no insurance.
