Epilepsy Project

Mon, 02/14/2011 - 17:23

Hi, I need help with a school project with epilepsy, I need to compare sleep habits with people with epilepsy then people who don't.  If you were to be so kind and answer a few questions for me that would be very helpful thank you! P.S. be free to put anything else that you think is important!

1.How long do you sleep per night on average?

2.Does medication affect your sleep?  (how long you sleep, the quality of your sleep, make your sleep better worsen it? etc.)

3.How do the medications work?

4.How often are you woken up during the night?

5.If you have a seizure during the night, do you feel tired afterward?

6.If you have a seizure during the night, is it harder/easier to go to sleep the same night?

I've been epileptic ever since I was 7, I'm 34 now.  In my case, sleep is extremely important, because I can pretty much count on having a couple of complex partial seizures the next day if I don't get a good night of sleep.  To answer your questions:

1.How long do you sleep per night on average? 8 hours

2.Does medication affect your sleep?  (how long you sleep, the quality of your sleep, make your sleep better worsen it? etc.) My anticonvulsant medication does not affect my sleep, but I do also take 2 Tylenol PM pills each night to help make sure I get my 8 hours.

3.How do the medications work? My anticonvulsants pretty much keep me 100% seizure free so long as I get my sleep.  They are also helped by the Vagus Nerve Stimulator I got seven years ago.

4.How often are you woken up during the night? I'm not sure.  If I do wake up, I pretty much do fall right back to sleep, so in the morning I'm really not sure if I did wake up during the night or not.

Hope this helps.  Best of luck with your project.

Hi. I've had nocturnal seizures since I was 2, I'm 40 now.  I average around 6-7 hours per night, my meds work 90% of the time, I feel very tired after a seizure (usually lasts about a day) and have no difficulties falling back to sleep after a seizure. You're doing a very interesting project, please let me know what the results are.:)

 Take care,

Teresa
