Seizures at night.

Wed, 01/27/2016 - 09:22

Hi everyone,

I have 30 second episodes and seizures at night, i.e. shaking left side of body and face.

I've seen a number of neurologists and have been to a clinic for a 10 day stay. I've been on keppra, oxcarb, lyrica. So far nothing has made an impact at all. EEGs have always been normal (10+ EEGs done in the last 13 years) and two MRI's that have been fine. Basically refractory idiopathic partial seizures. Stress has no impact on them, but I've done a lot of training lately and I was seizures free for four weeks, until yesterday, which is basically a record for me. Usual frequency is seizures set in at 11:30pm once a week, mainly Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Friday, no matter when I go to sleep (which is on average 10pm or 11pm). The longer the break between them the more intense they get. The really mild one feel like zapping coming from my left eye down my arm. The more intense ones force me to shut my left eye and squint and my left arm shakes until eventually it's over.

I'm torn between trying another bout of medication or leaving it and just calmly carrying on with my life as I have been the last few years. I'm really scared and anxious of the meds as I've had neg experiences with keppra (mood) and oxcarb (sun burn like sensations on my back that lasted for two weeks after I stopped using ox).

Still not convinced it's epilepsy at all although sometimes I wish it was and it was just a final diagnosis. But then again I think if meds can't treat it it doesn't matter if it's epilepsy or not, you know?

I have hashimoto's, too. But otherwise I'm fine. What could my next steps be? Back to see the doc? Another EEG? Try more meds? Live with it and enjoy the rest? I'm kinda exhausted, too. I have a high-pressure job, people are being layed off, I have a young child and wife at home, and I'm dragging this along with me.

cheers!
