Over 4 Years and still going strong

Sat, 11/29/2014 - 00:42

Hi there everybody. I had my first seizure when I was 7 and am now 32. I have taken a number of medicines throughout my life until I went on 1 special item that was new at the time.

After getting treatment at Yale New Haven Hospital to see if I was eligible for surgery and finding out I wasn't, the doctor took me off of the 500mg Depakote and put me on the 500mg Keppra as I stayed on the 100mg Lamictal. Ever since I went on Keppra I have been seizure and aura free since October 2010 and haven't had any serious side effects.

I was very happy to be taken off of Depakote due to how slow and sleepy it made me, interacting with my IBS, and eating very often. After about 6 months of being off of the Depakote, I went from a size 33 men's waist to a size 29, I was sleeping lesser hours, lesser digestive issues, and my mind became quicker and more cautios about things.

Another thing that amazes me about the Keppra is if I were to be watching TV or on my computer and quick flashing happens for a short period, I don't get any single feeling of a small aura even if I keep my eyes open. When I was still on Depakote I always had to close my eyes quickly so the quick flashing didn't trigger an aura and seizure.

The only common side effect that still occurs due to the Lamictal is being unsteady, such as not walking in a straight line and quickly lossing balance when standing on 1 foot.

I hope all of you with partial and abcense seizures are doing well and are able to take Keppra to keep it under control like me.

I am glad to see your post. I too am not a patient for sergury but I have been taking Keppra or the generic for about as long as you have. I am not seizure free but the seizures I have now are seconds long and the average person would know nothing about them unless they were told. My PCP didn't know I had one in his office while we were talking about other issues. He was amazed to know that my seizures are like they are now compared to those he saw me in back then. I do hope your stay seizure free and yes Keppra does help a person think and act better and help their trsin of thought. Joe
