Monthly seizures or sleep deprivation

Tue, 10/18/2016 - 11:34
Hi, I seem to have fallen into a pattern of having epileptic seizures while sleeping every 30 days or so. I know that women can be more prone to seizures at times of the month but is the same true for men please? Perhaps mild sleep deprivation could build up over the weeks to mimic the same thing?

Hi Andypg. I chatted with someone about this before; it may have been you. Anyway, I'll tell you what I know and what I've experienced. and you decide. Yes, women have more likelihood of having a seizure during their period due to one or both hormones, progesterone and estrogen cause a change in the way medications are metabolized and/or absorbed into the brain cells. I have approached Dr's about guys hormone--testosterone---causing an increased likelihood of seizures at "that time of the month". Not readily accepted but men have fluctuations in their hormone levels that cause their own unique effects. Men don't have the menstrual factors; but do have changes in hormone levels and consequential increased chance of seizures. I tracked my own "periods" for over a year. During the last 2-3 days of one month and the next 3+/- days of the next month my mood would change. I became more irritable, quicker to over-react to what someone said or what happened, etc. People told me during that time I was "PMS'ing". Also, according to calendars I kept it showed an increase of seizures during that same time frame. I contend, and put the idea to Dr's., that since it is known men's testosterone levels change, that testosterone is proven to have a direct effect on increasing the metabolism it is theoretically possible that during that time of increased testosterone levels the medication is metabolized faster causing a dip//lower level of med in the blood stream and not getting enough med to the brain to control seizures. Putting the two together, mood changes on a regular basis and the increase in seizures at the same time gives evidence that men's hormonal changes can increase their chance of having a seizure like a woman's change in hormone levels can increase their chances as well. Drs. have given that a good theory to research and I am waiting to see the results. I hope this will help clarify and give some insight into your question. Take care and hope you can consistently control your seizures. >>>>Robert
