Zonisamide and excessive sleep...

Mon, 02/29/2016 - 15:10
Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm just looking for anyone who maybe has answers for me. Basically, my girlfriend is epileptic and has been since she was diagnosed at age 12. I live with my girlfriend and we're been under a lot of stress recently with bills etc as she was told by her neurologist to take 6 months out of college and work to get her neurologist which was ok at the time but I'm a student and only have my student loan so the bills can sometimes rack up. She's realised now that she's almost got no other choice but to go back to work which is fine but my concern in she can't physically stay awake for a full day. She can get up at say 1300 be up for a couple of hours then sleep again till 2000. She'll again be up shortly and then by 2300 she'll be in bed asleep again. All this seems to have happened since she started zonisamide 7 weeks ago. The end result would be 200mg in a day which her full dose would start this Saturday. The problem I'm thinking though, if she can't be out of bed for more than a couple of hours, how will she actually sustain a job? Her sleeping is affecting the whole life we have together as I'm almost her carer in the sense that while she's awake she's almost always too tired to do anything but ea or watch t.v. which is fine but i'm having to do all my uni work, house jobs and keep up with fitness and friends in my spare time. She will also be up for a few hours every night (my guess is because she sleeps so much during the day) which keeps me up a bit too. My question is, does zonisamide usually cause problems like this? She's on keppra and Epiplim chrono too. If zonisamide does cause this amount of tiredness, does anyone know how it can be remedied or at least reduced? It's an uphill struggle which isn't getting better and it's mainly since the zonisamide kicked in and could really do with some answers as we've not had much from her neurologist. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
