Weaning off Keppra?

Thu, 06/25/2015 - 16:43

Hello,

I don't have a medication problem. I wonder about others' experiences with weaning off Keppra. To make a very long story short, I have recently done some testing with a gastroenterologist and it has been determined I have non-celiac gluten sensitivity. I've been on a gluten-free diet for the past several weeks and within a week, the neuropathy, headaches, etc. that occured while consuming gluten, had completely subsided. I had a seizure several months ago and have been on Keppra since then, with no major side effects or additional seizures. I am not trying to get ahead of myself, but during my next appointment with the neurologist, would like to discuss my recent diagnosis and the connection between gluten sensitivity and seizures, especially because the symptoms I experienced with consuming gluten have been neurological in nature. If the conversation does come to weaning me off the medicine, I'm interested to know if others had a relatively easy or hard time with the process? Did you notice any withdrawal symptoms? Did the intensity / frequency of your seizures increase? I completely understand the effects of taking medication and weaning from it can be different for each person, but I would really like to hear personal experiences. Thank you so much for your time!

Weaning off any medication

Weaning off any medication needs to be done with the neurologist knowing what is happening. Only in certain circomstances is a person taken off one medication and put on another without weaning. I knowbeen there done that. I had taken a medication for oer 30 years and had gotten toxic on it so I HAD to be taken off and put on and it was done in a hospital where they could watch me. I was in there for 1-2 weeks si they could see that the medications were working right. As for your head aches great I know food can do a lot of things but I am not sure they can cause a seizure.  In my visits with my doctors be they my neurologist, GP or my Cardiologist we discuss everything having to do with my health. They all know ALL the medications I take including over the counter medications mainly because I don't want anything to counter my heart and seizure meidcations.  Having a seizure several months ago may not have been due to your non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Oh and just so you'll know it if you have taken keppra for sopme time once you have stopped taking it does not mean it is out of your system. It takes just as much time to get out of your body as it did to get to the theraputic levels your neurologist wanted you on. I hope this helps Joe
