Weaning off Dilantin -

Mon, 10/23/2006 - 22:01
Hiya.. I posted in the newbie section but thought i should try a short version here. I have gotten my dr.'s approval to wean off of Dilantin. I am kind of scared after being on it for 18 years. Its been 2 months and i am down to 100mg per day from 600mg. I have a CONSTANT metallic taste in my mouth and i wonder if it is related? I am also having quite a bit of buzzing in my ears.. like white noise. thank you for any help Eleanor

actually i have to wean off of dilantin now too, so im glad you posted..... i have been taking 500 mg a day and the new neurologist i am seeing told me to slowly decrease as he is putting me on topamax.... i havent started yet, but if i get the same issues (taste/buzzing) i will let you know.... also, has anyone made this change (from dilantin to topamax) and it helped them? dilantin hasnt really done much but make me fat and moody lol

What is the reason you are being switched to Topamax? I have had problems with depression and possiblly bipolar disorder and wondered if a different seizure med would be more helpful. When my dr. resisted completely to even talk about it after all these years, i have done this to satisfy myself. i am scared and worried about my decision.

i requested to be switched to something else because dilantin caused my weight to double and gave me manic episodes- i thought no doctor would put me on anything different until i went to this last one and he was super-helpful :)
