Vimpat alternative?

Mon, 07/13/2015 - 18:02
My 24 year old son is currently taking trileptal and Vimpat. They are working fairly well. He averages about one seizure every 4 months or so. Unfortunately he will be aging out of our insurance next year and the cost of Vimpat will be prohibitive. It's a shame that such important medicine is so expensive. Has anyone switched from Vimpat to another medicine that is cheaper and works as well? Topamax and depakote are out. Along this vein, how's do you afford the meds in this situation. He's doesn't have seizures often enough to be considered disabled. But he is unlikely to find a full time job with benefits because of some learning disabilities and the general economy. Very frustrating. We really can't afford $1200/mo for meds.
