Trileptal vs. Tegretol

Thu, 07/14/2005 - 12:10

Hello all...Had some questions regarding Trileptal vs. Tegretol:

1.  Which is stronger?

2.  How do the doses compare?  What dose of Trileptal equals a comparable dose of Tegretol?

3.  Any feedback on switching from Tegretol to Trileptal?

Thanks!!!!

I have been on both and still on trileptal. They both have bad and good side effects.

I was on tegretal for 20 some years. I was dizzy, and stomach aches all the time. The dizziness came after dinner when I took the meds. I mostly got that when I did not have alot of sleep. The stomach aches was alot. I kept tums in my pocketbook all the time and took it all the time.

I switched about three years ago to trileptal. I am doing very well on this, seizures are good. I have two side effects.

Once in a great while I get a burning sensation around my nose after I take the meds. For just about a few minutes. No biggie.

But the problem is, it decreases the sodium and if the sodium gets to too, it will cause a grand mal. I try to keep up with the sodium all the time. ANd with the summer it is worse because you are drinking and sweating. Now that the dose was lowered, my sodium is up slightly higher now.

thank god

good luck on your decision

I am on 600mg twice a day.  This is the only thing I take.  I switched from Tegretol to lessen cognative side effects, but I have also been sweating (especially at night), and been finding myself nervous for no reason.  I work full time.

Been on this dose for about a week (up from 450mgx2day). Gonna give it another week or so to see if the side effects fade.  If not, I think I will switch back to the Tegretol.
