Topamax side effects.

Wed, 08/24/2005 - 15:31

Hello,

I have been taking Topamax for about 4 months now. When I first started on the medication I had to gradually increase my dosage. The doctor wanted me to go all the way up to 400 mg per day. After a week I couldn't sleep and started having panic attacks. Two weeks and I was so obbsessive-compulsive...I couldn't stop washing my hands, the laundry, vacuuming, scratching my legs..I refused to ever turn the lights off...I was far too neurotic to even notice if I was hallucinating..I couldn't communicate with people..It made my family members very angry with me. I am a new mother and my parents called child protective services on me because they believed that I was out of control and possibly using street drugs. I was so lost in this medicine that I couldn't help myself..so I told my partner to force me to see my doctor and I had him lower my dosage to 50 mg per day. I chose to stay on this medication because even though I was having such horrible psychological side effects, I had no seizures this entire time. SO....I've pretty much been seizure free for the past 4 months while taking 50 mg of topamax and .05 mg of clonazapam as needed..yay! So maybe Topamax isn't so bad..I think it's just the initial stage of getting the right amount into your system. -Emily
