Topamax hallucinations

My son was just changed from Depakote to Topamax and we are still stirating up to his max dosage; we are in week 4. I researched the med when prescribed and didn't like what I saw, but since side effects MIGHT not happen with him and he was so upset with the depakote (hair loss, he's 15), I thought we'd try.I didn't let him read the list of side effects so he would not be influenced. He is seeing lines connecting everything together; he describes it as a special effects, like in a movie or photo when the film is rushed together. Is this something normal for this med or to be reported to the DR?Will it go away?(can you tell I'm new here ? :-) thanks for your help......)

Hi,

My son started having seizures at the age of 8 he's 15 now. I don't want to scare you but, Topamax was terrible for my son. I'm not saying anything like what my son went through will happen to your son. Please report anything to your doc. David saw spiders and lost most of his speech, And, told us alot that things look weird. All this happened the 3rd day on the meds. I pray I didn't scare you But, I've really never heard anything really good about this drug. (i'm sure their are though) David's speech came back but he still has word search problems. So please be very careful. How old was your son when his seizures started? I pray the topamax works for your son.

Blessings,

Kristi

Godzilla,I am also on Topomax, and am accelerating up to the full dosage within the next two weeks. I have experienced some dreadful side effects, but all in all, have been able to tolerate the med. Speech is one of the biggest. I have trouble finishing sentences, finding the words, getting lost midway in a sentence, or conversation. I'm also confused, for example. I poured a cup of coffee, put it in the microwave to heat it up, got the creamer out of the refrigerator, forgot I had a cup in the microwave, and poured yet another cup of coffee. That is typical behavior for me, at this point in time. I'm sure that will lessen in time, but is annoying at the present. I also will walk in a particular room to do something, and forget what I'm doing. If I make a phone call, I tend to forget the purpose of my call. No wonder I can't return to work!...lol I too see 'trails', but that is only for a day or so, after the day that I increase the topomax. I also find that the 2-3 days after the increase, I'm worthless...I have a hard, very hard time functioning, and sleep for long periods of time. I do get energy toward the end of the week, just in time to increase the meds again!..Gotta love those side effects!I don't know if this has helped any, but know we are here for you and your son.Keep safe...always.classy

Thanks for your input-he's been having seizures for a little over 2 yrs.-result of blunt head trauma. It's so hard to know if you are making the right long term decisions for a child.
