Topamax and Keppra?

Mon, 02/27/2006 - 20:09
Just wondering if any of you out there are on a combination of topamax and Keppra? I'm not. A Doctor buddy of mine reccomended it to me for my complex partial seizures. I'm on 300mg (bid) topamax and I have been for almost 3 yrs. It's not great but look at our condition (thank God for my strong faith and wonderful husband!) but every couple months I cluster. My condition is related to a stroke that had no warning signs at the age of 29. Seizures followed after second stroke 2 yrs later. Looking forward to hearing from you:-) Rosalie

Hi Rosalie I am so sorry to hear that you have had 2 strokes at such a young age. I am on a combination of Keppra and Topamax at the moment and have been for the last 2 weeks, but only because I am in the process of changing over my meds which will take me about 3 months to complete. I have already found that Topamax has reduced the terrible headaches I was getting previously to starting it which I think is due to the keppra and that my appetite has also reduced. I don't like taking keppra at all and have found that there are others feeling the same way. You don't say how you find taking the combination of both these 2 meds? All the best and take care Teri

Hi Rosalie My doctor says I had a stroke when I was born due to lack of calcium which then injured my brain and was left in quarantine for 10 years. I was 10 when I had my first epileptic seizure. At the moment I am taking 1200mg of Tegretol Retard, 3000mg Keppra and have just started taking topamax and will be bringing that up to 200mg a day. When I have that done, then I will be coming off the keppra so to stay on 2 types of meds only. I have grand mal and partial seizures. I have been on the keppra for quite a while now, about 2 years I'd say. I haven't had any bad side effects from it. It was given to me as an add on therapy to my tegretol but the keppra isn't helping that much. That is why I am changing meds. There is no harm in trying out the keppra to see if it helps you or not. You'll know yourself if it's worth taking or not. Some people need 2 meds to control all or some of seizure control. Some people like keppra an others dont. It didn't do me any harm. It just didn't help much. I wish you the best of luck, it's good you have a loving an dsupportive husband :-) My heart goes out to you Quirky
