Tongue Biting Pain Relief

Sun, 06/11/2006 - 10:11
Just a quick line to share what I use for intense tongue-biting pain after a doozie of a seizure. It's an over-the-counter medication in a tube, called OralJel. It's for rubbing on sore teeth and gums, so it's safe for the inside of your mouth, and it numbs those little teethmarks beautifully. It was my husband's idea (as he has had extensive dental work, poor thing), and it was a lifesaver.

Just a quick tip I got from my maxilofacial surgeon today, when he was inspecting my tongue that I turned into hamburger meat during my last seizure.

If someone cradles your head in their hands and applies gentle pressure under your jaw, on the joint of the lower jaw (i.e. under the ears) that forces the tongue to pull back and your jaw to stay closed. This means you can't bite your tongue to pieces. Also, it is always worth checking if you need stitches. If I had gotten them, my healing time would have been 3-4 days rather than the 15 I am looking at now!

I've used Oragel for dental problems. Usually when I'd try to put it on my teeth, I'd always wind up getting some on my tongue. When my epilepsy started, it's use just seemed natural to me.

During my last seizure, I literally almost ATE my tongue! LOL That's how badly I had bitten it. Good idea with the Orajel. I also recommend ICE CUBES. It numbs it and can also reduce swelling.
