TIA/Stroke Symptoms with Lamicatal/Keppra

Fri, 08/04/2017 - 19:21
Just curious if anyone else has had symptoms of a stroke when they were over medicated on these two meds. I am currently taking 3000 mg of keppra and 500 mg of lamicatal. I had an episode of being unsteady and having to lean on the wall on my right side going down the steps and trouble walking.I had bad headache. I went home when I wasn't feeling well. But, tried to go in a couple of hours later. I had difficulties speaking words and mixing them up, trouble walking, comprehending or understanding how to do something, short term memory, and identifying objects on paper. It lasted about 6 hours and I was hospitalized. All the tests came out normal. My EEG also came out normal with no seizure activity (first time in years). My Lamictal level came back at 21. I have to get the kappra level done on the 10th. My symptoms have pretty much gone away. Although, I still have headache and pressure on my left side of my head including my ear, which i didn't have before. I have missing parts of recent events and got day activities messed up. They put it down that i had a tia. But, no one seemed to think it quite fit .From what I read I had many of the symptoms. Can either of these be connected to having a tia/stroke.

TIA's are also called mini

TIA's are also called mini strokes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient_ischemic_attack , Go to that site and do research what a TIA is and what you need to do. You should talk to your GP and take the information and tests from the hospital with you. Also discuss this issue with your neurologist since stokes and anything affecting the central nervous system needs to be looked at

Thank you for your post. I

Thank you for your post. I have been reading everything I could about the symptoms I had and about TIAs. While my symptoms do follow many of the symptoms that you find with TIAs. My lasted about 6 hours, while others usually last much less time. Also, most my symptoms effected both sides of my body. However, on the eeg there was no seizure activity which probably rules out seizures. This also wasn't a gradually thing and it ended with most of the symptoms ending at the same time. It started at about 10 am and ended about 6 pm. I would think that if this episode was related to over medication that it would not end since nothing was done. All the tests came back normal that I am aware of including the MRI, CAT, blood work, heart scan, and vessel scan. Although, they were still looking at those when I left. My memory for short term memory is still much reduced from memory tests I took. I could only recall two words out of about 14 on two different tests. My speech is back to normal as is my walking. I still have some weakness and don't have much energy. The internalist on call thought I had a petit mal seizure. Which I know wasn't the case. The neurologist I had never seen before and saw my lamictal level and said that is what caused my symptoms. Which I don't feel would explain some of the symptoms I had during the episode. What I remember is that I had trouble walking and unsteady and had to lean against the railing at 10 am and laid down for 2 hours after getting a bad headache. I got up to go to work but was weak and unsteady on my feet. I guess I should have stayed home but I didn't want to miss work. I told my supervisor that I was having trouble with weakness but if I felt too bad I would go home. I went to put items away but couldn't seem to be too weak to do much. I could figure out to fold curtains to put into the packages. That is when I left. I had a very bad headache that made it hard to keep my eyes open. I also had problems with putting words to together and had to slowly talk. I didn't have the energy to hardly put one foot in front of the other. At the hospital I kept getting my days confused and what I had done on those days. I recalled a different day and could remember the previous day until my husband reminded me of what we did. They did a cognitive pictures that  I know I wasn't doing well on. My guess is the closest I came to having weakness on one side is when I had to lean toward the left when I went down the steps. Otherwise, I don't recall favoring one side over another. Although, I did seem to have more problems with the coordination during the tests on that side. But, no drooping or favoring one side over another. After about 6 pm I was asked if I would like to go home or stay and do diagnostic testing. Headache went away and no trouble speaking or walking. Did have elevated blood pressure at 165-85 throughout the night. Left with 149-75 which didn't seem to be a problem for them. I am going to get checked out for high blood pressure. Haven't had a follow up scheduled yet for neurologist and level to test on the 10th. Family doctor to see on 14th and neurology appt. to be arranged in the next 10 days. Still have weakness when walking through a store and memory problems. I plan to go back to work on Monday.Opinions are welcome - I know this isn't medical information just some input and if anyone else had this type of experience.

THE TAI can be caused by

THE TAI can be caused by blood flow thru the central nervous system.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient_ischemic_attack ^^^^ That site and others need to be research for your safty and protection. All your doctors need to know about this issue. Research would show you that people that have and experience with TAI get strokes later.
