Taring off Trleptal

Tue, 05/12/2015 - 10:08

Hello, my 16 yr old autistic son has been seizure free for two years while on Trileptal.  The doctor wants to start tapering him off his med.  I am very nervous about doing this.  Do you think I should get a second opinion before tapering?

2 years without seizures is good and many neurologists will want to taper people off medications. If he has a seizure while tapering off then the dosage can changed back to where it was. It is the therapeutic levels that will be watched. It takes 2-4 weeks and at times longer for the medication to completely leave the body. The neurologist would like to keep him seizure free and unless tapering off is tried then your son will be taking medications he might not need
