Started medication this week

Thu, 08/07/2014 - 16:12

I started lamictal xr 25mg this week.  Next week I'm having VEEG starting on Wednesday, on Tuesday I increase to 50mg.  Can this med interfere with EEG?  Or is this to low a dose to stop a seizure.  Thanks!

there are many medications out there and they all stop seizures. You just started taking this medication and it does take time for your body to get used to it so you need to have adjustments. As for stopping a seizure yes it can. It would not have been approved if it didn't work. Understand that medications that work for one person may not work for the next. The same for dosages. Some people will not be able to use it but others will have their seizures stopped even if the dosage is low. The reason is each and every body is different. Each and every persons epilepsy is different. With me I have always had to have the highest dosage since my body blocks out meds. The EEG is a brain wave test and meds do not interfere with it. The test is about 1 hour and will be gathering the electrical impulses from your brain. If it is normal they didn't find anything. If it shows abnormalities then found where those abnormalities came from. An abmormality is basically seizure activity. All a seizure is is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction. Medications are designed to stop those impulses from hitting wrong.  The VEEG will be done and you will be watched which can collect more data. Understand that there are 40+ different types of seizures and many people do not know they had a seizure even though they had one. absence seizures are like day dreams. I had been written up for day dreaming in class for over a year. Those day dreans were petite mal seizures. I had a wierd feeling in my right hand from time to time. I thought they were from over exerting it. Those wierd feeling were focal seizures. In both of those I didn't fall or go into a convulsion and people were around me and they didn't know anything about them. Like I posted teachers had been writting me up for day dreaming. Theneurologist will view all the information obtained in the VEEG. If they see seizure activity on the EEG they will then look at that time period on the video to see what you looked like and that can help them with their diagnosis. When I had my last all i did was do what ever I wanted in the room. I watched movies, read some mags, listened to music.Oh and the food was good. I could have people come in and stay for long periods of time. Basically it was like being in my living room only in a hospital. I hope this helps and your neurologist gets you seizure free
