Not all AEDs work in the same

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2014-07-24 - 17:15
Not all AEDs work in the same way, so it seems odd to group all of them together that way butyou say he has problems with other medications so that seems like a bigger problem than just AEDs. Is his neurologist an epileptologist who really deals with more complex cases? Did any medications reduce the seizures, did the neuro start at super low doses? If you already see an epileptologist, have you discussed alternatives.. keto/mad/other diet, surgery, or something else?

I have a 7yo with health

I have a 7yo with health issues so I've only read about transitioning to adult specialists.  Although my oldest is now 18 and I have others, so I do have practice with a general philosophy about handing over control bit by bit; sorry that any bad experiences make things harder no matter who it is, issue after issue with my youngest. Hope your son's general goal is for doctors who listen and partner with him. Sounds like the current neuro is a bad fit. A very experienced seizure specialist (in US thought there is some extra training for epileptologists, don't know how it works there) should understand the bad side effects, listen, and find ways to mitigate impacts for your son's best balance between seizure control and quality of life. Hope you and he can find the right specialist for him. Is there an epilepsy organization there which can identify the more experienced neurologists and give you better local info?

Hi Norm Amy Jo stated it

Hi Norm Amy Jo stated it right all AED's are designed to stop seizures. An AED which works for one perason and dossage the same does not work on the next which is why there is no one size fits all AED. If the medication reduced the seizures it was doing what it was designed to do. If he is having problems with other medications there are many created to work in other areas of the body to disolve in different ways. I saw that you have tried diferent things, meds, diets and are still trying. It took a long time to actually get a diagnosis for me. Testing did that and I still had seizures from time . I do hope you can get him back to a specialist and he gets tested and they do get his seizures under control.
