Please help - should I change off Tegretol?

Mon, 11/14/2016 - 12:01
Hi All, I'm new to this forum and I would love some help if at all possible please. I'm on 1100MG of Tegretol Slow Release a day, I've been on it for just under 10 years but I think I'm starting to become immune to it because i'm having breakthrough Dejavu's - which is why it was put up from 1000MG to 1100MG daily but they're still happening. I didn't jump at the chance of changing the medication when I originally went to see my neurologist but now i'm thinking I might need to as I've just read quite a few studies and one is showing that over 1000mg a day puts a birth defect rate up to 5 - 9%!! :( My Husband and I have been trying for years to get pregnant and now we're going through IVF, I would be heart broken if I caused my child to have a birth defect because I couldn't lower my dosage. So sorry for the ramble but can I ask a few of things? - Has anyone been on 1000 + mg a day when pregnant and everything was ok? - Has anyone changed from a high dose of Tegretol slow release to Lamotrigine and if so how much Lamotrigine were you put on? - Has anyone changed drugs so close to getting pregnant and been ok? EG no Grand Mal Seizures I haven't had a Grand Mal for almost 6 years but it is the break through dejavu's I've had, it's just I don't want a 9% risk of deformity for my unborn baby if I am lucky enough to get pregnant. Thank you very much in advance.x

If the increase hasn't slowed

If the increase hasn't slowed the number of seizures down then call your neurologist and discuss that along with your wanting a family and you research your medication. Neurologists know the safest medications for women that get pregnant. A call might be all that is needed to start weaning you off one and onto the new medication and a visit in a 2-3 months should be made
