Petit Mal Epilepsy

Mon, 06/05/2006 - 11:27
Hi there i am now 16, and i have had petit mal epilepsy for 11 nearly 12 years. i find it quite hard to cope with especially the fact i wont be able to start driving in 4 months and many of my friends will. I dont really know how and why i got epilepsy but i have heard that if you have a high IQ it is more likely to affect you. is that true? Also if i want to try alternative treatments such as omega 3 tablets should i still take the medication i am on. I am currently taking Eplim and Ethosuximide which equals out as 7 tablets twice a day. so i was hoping to try and come off it because it is not working. Does anybody no any other forms of treatment that help such as acupuncture and if they do which are better for petit mal? please write back asap im getting desperate

Hi Becki020, I am female and have had petit mal symptoms for 40 yrs, all through life had the blank stares and brief absences. I also was not the type to take any sort of medication for anything so at 17 yrs I had a grand mal seizure in the shower at a girlfreind's house (imagine the embarassment of that naked) and now at 44, something underlying recently bought on another grand mal seizure possibly sleep apnea, as happened in sleep. Before this had been driving for 27 years with no seizures. I've been banned from driving for 3 months, its very heartwrenching I know but try and see the positive side of other ways of getting around until such time as you can drive. Its very rare for someone to be given a life sentence of not being able to drive, just take your meds, I'm on Epilim too, record and report your progress, if your not happy with your Neurologist see someone else. I've also purchased Omega 3, but would never take more than 1 a day - there is still not enough research for any positive affects from Omega 3 especially for Epileptics. If your concerned about any poor learning or memory problems get a full neurological, psychological examination or indepth test for memory. Cheer up there are alot of people in this world worser off.
