In need of help with two medications Depakote and Keppra

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 13:29

I am 27 and back in 2007 out of know where i had a seizure and from then on i have been diagnosed with epilepsy.  Since then though i have had surgery which has helped out a lot but still i will always need to be on a medication.  So it is between depakote and Keppra First we tried staying on Keppra and slowly started taking off Depakote but after awhile things changed and i wasnt myself anymore my temper increased, mood got worse and everyone noticed i was also getting down on things.  But the issue is i hear with depakote that it messes with your concentration and memory as well as focus.  I am worried about this because i am in school for my degree and really dont need that.  So if anyone can help with whether or not this is true also i heard that depakote can mess with your mood as well so not sure if that is true as well.  Just in need of some advice things just havent been to great for awhile now.

   I've had seizures since I

I've had seizures since I was 11. I'm now 28,  Have little ones and I've tried every medication out there. When I was told I was being put on Depakote it freaked me out. My brother was on it for ADHD bipolar. So naturally I assumed that's what I had. But they told me it was used for both. I took it for about a month and I started hallucinating, enough to be admitted to the hospital. So Depakote was no good for me. Topamax was my other option and that caused me to have more seizures.        Now I take keppra, dilantin, and lamictal. Doctors want me off dilantin because of osteoporosis and gum disease. But every time they change it I start having seizures again.      I've been trying to tell my doctor that it's usually around my menstruation when my seizures happens, she stated she had no idea of such a thing. Then to find out there is, catamenial seizures.      So they want me to start a new medicine called Onsi (controlled substance), not really available, still experimenting with. Found out it also treats Catamenial seizures. That's how I found out what they were. Huh, kinda makes you wonder how well they do their job. Haven't started new medicine but was told might raise my dilantin levels. They want to check levels in 2 wks. P.S. my levels are already in upper 20' s. For those who take dilantin they know that's high.  Will report back in 2 wks and see how everything goes.               Hope all goes well for my children. Both under 8. The fear in their eyes makes me want to do whatever it takes never to have 1 again.
