my child and keppra

Sun, 05/22/2005 - 17:14

my daughter just had her first seizures on saturday, may 15.  because i have epilepsy and i am on keppra, the doctors automatically thought that this would be good for her.

she is going crazy, so hyper and emotional.  i need to know what to do.

has this happened to any other parent out there?

how do you handle a 7 yr old going out of control who has always been an angel?

i know that keppra doesn't seen to have any real bad effects on me, i take 1000 mg twice a day, she is taking 1.8 cc  twice a day.

i cant wait to talk to her doctor!!!!!!

I called my epileptologist, and he referred me to the best pediatric epileptologist in the area, i just have to wait three weeks to see her.    what do i do till then?

i am open for any and all suggestions out there...

thanks, melissa

Melissa, is there any way for you to talk to your doctor's nurse or anyone in his (her) office in the mean time. You Daughter may be on too high a dose to begin with?Keppra can change personality, I have heard that it can bring out schizophrenic type behaviour.

My 7 year old son was also on keppra. We took him off after 5 days. Even lowering the dose did not help. He acted like he was drunk or stoned. He would walk into walls I keep him home from school for the whole week. Now he is on lamictal after he got used to the side effects about a week after each increase he did really well. In two years he has had 3 clonic tonic during sleep. All trest were normal. I thinkl he was having abscence seizures during the day because he was struggling and daydreaming  alot at school. Now with the lamictal he is doing great at school! good luck

Mellissa. Hi. I would definately phone up a nurse about this behavior. Like with so many other AEDs what is okay for one person won't be okay for another. Me, I couldn't take the keppra. Out of all the AEDs that I have been on Keppra caused the worst behavior change in me. My mom can tell you horror stories about how mean and nasty I became. You definately want your daughter off keppra asap. The best AED that I ever took was Zonegran. It had fewer side effects for me than any of the rest of the AEDs. It sounds like you can see the change in your daughter. Once she gets off the keppra it will take a while for her behavior to regulate back to normal. It all depends on how long she has been on keppra and how quicly her body responds to the elimination of the drug. I hope you get it figured out soon and that you get "your daughter back." Blessings. Linda.
