Medicine stop grand mals but not simple partials?

Fri, 08/04/2017 - 01:49
Hi there, I'm a 38 year old single woman who started getting grandmals(2) 3.5 years ago. After the second one, they put me on keppra 2000mg/ day and it stopped the grand mals but now I get simple partials(my aura before the grand mal). I never had a seizure of any kind before that and was wondering if it's normal to have a med prevent a big seizure but you still get the smaller simple partial ones? It's driving me crazy, I hate having them. I suffer from severe anxiety(always have) and this makes it worse. I want to add that all the seizures started after my mom died and now I get a sps at least once a week.. I have 2 questions: 1- think they could be non epileptic? Eeg, Mri,and ct scan clear. 2- have you ever had a med help a stronger seizure but not help weaker ones(auras)? Thanks in advanced.

they are likely real seizures

they are likely real seizures and meds often stop seizures from progressing but don't stop seizures completely if the dose isn't high enough, the med isn't quite right, or the seizures are resistant to treatment. our child's sps were reduced on meds, they also shortened but were not completely controlled, the cos were infrequent but they still occurred so we maxed out a drug and tried two others. the sps started slowing down without med changes after a number of years, but the doc now thinks this epilepsy will stop in a few years. talk to your doc about getting your seizures controlled, see if you can increase your meds (often first step) or could try other approaches (exercise or yoga can be stress reducers).

Keppra can stop all kinds of

Keppra can stop all kinds of seizures. partial seizures are one of many that keppra stops. If your dosage hasn't been changed or you haven't discussed these with your neurologist then that is what I would advise you to do. By discussing my seizures and talking to Doc we reduced my seizures (any and all) to a focal seizure affecting my right hand only every 8-14 days lasting a few seconds.

1- think they could be non epileptic? Eeg, Mri,and ct scan clear.  <<<< I had 20-25 different EEG's that all came back normal. The EEG shows the electrical output coming from your brain. What starts a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in your brain. The chain r reaction caused by they wrong hit is the seizure itself.... The MRI shows the brain as it is. If it is like everyone else's fine that's great. Neurologists are trying to find ANYTHING on the brain that can cause the electrical impressions to hit wrong. Those could be tumors, cell growth that grew wrong. For me it was scar tissue in the left lobes of my brain in more then one lobe. We found that out back in 1964. Doc verified it 2 other times between 2002 and 2008. We were trying to find out if I was able to get different procedures that could stop all of my seizures.2- have you ever had a med help a stronger seizure but not help weaker ones(auras)? Yes I did have many different types of seizures. They ran the gammon on the list you have today. Petite mal (absence seizures) Grand mal (generalized tonic clonic) Focal motor (any of the partial seizures as well as generalized seizures) So yes I do know that medications can and do control all kinds of seizures. Today I can have a seizure that you would not know I had if we were talking to each other. SO you should be discussing the seizures or episodes with your neurologist and ask them what can be done to stop them. You see that is what I did and worked with them to get the number of seizures I had controlled. I will never be completely seizure free and I have known that for years now. That did not deter Doc and I from working to get better control. As for your meds <<< are you taking them like they are supposed to be taken?? Two times a day does not mean 9 am and 7pm. That is 2 times a day but in order to keep the therapeutic levels straight those times need to be about 12 hours apart. Unless the doctor states otherwise.
