Medication for Children

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 16:41

Hi there. I'm new on the forum and wanted some advice on Medication for my 6 year old daughter.

She is currently on Tegretol (Carbemazepine) which seems to be making her very drowsy and has a 'dumbing down' effect on her senses, in addition to other side effects. Can anyone recommend a good alternative with less side effects, I appreciate that different medication effects different people in different ways. I would like to know if there was someone with some experience of trying different medication, and also if Tegretol effects people like this?

She has multi focal partial seizures.

Many thanks

Tim without knowing how long

Tim without knowing how long she has been on her meds some of us can't help alot. I know that there are women in here that have ideas and yes know some about children and what it is like to take care of them. I am the one that has epilepsy. For as long as I have been taking meds for seizures there isn't 1 medication that doesn't make a person drozy. Some do more then others. However " different medication effects different people in different ways" says alot. Each persons seizure is different to itself. With me most side effects went away after 4-6 weeks after startig it. But some things like getting drozy I did but there were times I didn't. Dumbing down the brain with some meds did happen but I also learned that all a person has to do is talk to the neurologist. I called mine and asked questions. Please do that call and ask "If there a different medication that doesn't have these side effects" Or  " Is my dughters dosage too high or too low" let him know what she has been going thru and what you have been seeing. I know it isn't easy to get medications and dosages set at theraputic levels .I also know that neurologists generally put a patient on a medication they know works for another patient they have at the same dosage. They can start there and raise or lower the dosage. I think Amy Jo or Mereloaded will post in response to your question. I do hope this helps and she gets the assistance she needs Joe
